So in the middle of my 5th grade year, dad got a job as pastor in a small backwoods town about an hour from where we currently lived. It meant a new home, new school, new everything. It was definitely a strong mix of excitement and anxiety. It wasn't long however before I made friends with some of the kids that went to the church.
We lived in the manse, a house sat right beside the church. On the other side of our house was an old abandoned school building which the church had used for storage. So with three good sized yards front and back to play in and new friends, my imagination had a whole new grand space to grow and come up great ideas.
It was during this time that Star Wars, Dragon Ball Z, and Yugioh consumed a great deal of our time. Whether watching movies or shows, playing video and card games, or running around outside with plastic lightsabers we were pretty obsessed.
Middle school also brought with it my first trial and errors in romance if one could call it that. I was an awkward, clumsy, shy teenager learning a lot of life's first lessons. I also met my first true best friend in a guy whose nickname I'll use for now, Dachi. He was the same age as me but I really looked up to him. Some nights we would sit outside and talk till the next morning. He became a great friend and also a mentor to me.
Here we also met and became family with my stepbrother John. He went to our church and youth group. We also knew each other from school. Our friendship had a bit of rocky start but after his dad died, my parents adopted him. We grew closer being brothers and though we still don't always agree, I'll still always love him as my big bro. Also we still have yet to open our grilled cheese partner restaurant but that's a story for another time.
Speaking of I think this is a good place to end this weeks origins. Come back next week for more!
